Fredy Hirsch was a proud Jew and openly gay man born in Germany. At 19, after the Nuremberg Laws, he fled to the Nazi-conquered Czech Republic. There, he became a beloved sports teacher in a Jewish youth club. In Ghetto Terezin, Fredy headed the youth department, overseeing over 4,000 youth. In Auschwitz, he persuaded Mengele to set up a daycare, giving 600 children their final moments of happiness. Despite Auschwitz’s horrors, Fredy experienced acceptance, had a lover, and was admired for his goodness. He planned a revolt with the underground, but it never happened due to his mysterious death. This film, blending interviews, archives, and animation, seeks to uncover the mystery and honors Fredy’s legacy in gay history.
