The indelible music of Antony and the Johnsons has won the admiration of Lou Reed, Rufus Wainwright, and others. Turning captures the band in concert, celebrating 13 women taking the stage who, like Antony him/herself, are not easily categorized personas. Many of them are transgender, some gay, some straight. At its center are a series of intimate interviews with the women who performed this extraordinary show with Antony. Their stories combine with Antony’s mesmerizingly emotional songs to create a powerful journey of struggle and hope.
Director´s note on TURNING, THE FILM
Charles Atlas
Throughout my entire working life I´ve strived to combine my film making with my relations to my friends. Maybe it´s because many of my friends are such great and stunning performance artists! Maybe it´s a way for us to have an excuse talk to one another in a sharp, attentive and asthetic way. I actually think it is. I have been friends with Antony for some years now, and to me he is one of the most extraordinary performers in our time. Exploring a visual style and giving new dimensions to his music through imagery connected to the themes of his songs is one of the most inspiring conversations I´ve ever had. The time has come for a film.
Turning, the Film, will provide at once a stunning document of this rarely performed work, and a poignant portrait of the creative team who inhabited it. What emerges from Turning is an important frontier of urban feminine and even revolutionary consciousness, born of a unique time and place in history, and responding to crisis with radiance and creativity. The film showcases Antony’s rawly emotional singing in unprecedented stage footage, and its loving and intimate portrait of the company is captivating, heartbreaking, and ultimately hope‐filled and joyous.
