In the 60s and 70s, the booming French economy created a labor shortage, ending the golden era of coal mines. Former officer Félix Mora was sent to Morocco to recruit over 80,000 men for the French mines. For Mora, they represented a low-cost workforce willing to accept meager salaries and dangerous conditions, while young Moroccans saw a chance for a better future. After the mines closed, most settled in France, starting families and giving birth to over 600,000 French citizens across two generations.
