How to Use Film Platform – Guide for Faculty and Students

Create a Login

Streaming and accessing films on the player does not require you to have a Film Platform account. However, to take advantage of some of the features that will allow you to personalize your streaming experience (such as creating bookmarks and playlists and leaving comments) you will need to create an account.

This takes less than a minute to do this. Simply click “Sign Up” in the top right hand corner on the screen. You can then sign up to our site by using your existing Facebook or Google+ account, or by providing some very basic information.

Searching for films

On every single page of the site, you can use the search bar in the top right hand side to enter search terms and explore the corresponding films.

You can also visit the Films page to view the full Film Platform collection and filter films using the drop down categories on the left-hand side of the page. Here you have the option to filter by Topic, Country of production, Language and Distributor.

You are able to select multiple filters to narrow your search. For example, if you are looking for a film in Chinese about Education, you would be able to select “Education” from Topics filter menu, and “Chinese” from the “Language (spoken)” menu to find the films that match your criteria.

Video streaming tools

If you are visiting the site from on campus, or you are logged in to the library’s Proxy server, the streaming player opens up automatically every time you visit a film page. If you don’t see the player immediately, click the “Stream Now” button to jump down the page to the streaming player:

Accessing films off campus

If you are not on campus, you will have to log in to your Proxy server in order to access the streaming player. If you’re not quite sure how to do this, our site can walk you through the necessary steps. Visit the page of the film that you would like to view, and then select the Open Streaming option:

From the options that appear on screen, select the following:

You will then see a drop down list, from which you can search and find your institution. Once you click on the appropriate school, our site will take you to the school’s login page, to allow you to connect to the Proxy server and start streaming.

Once the site recognises that you have streaming access, the player will open up for you automatically. At the bottom left of the streaming player you will see a number of different tools to help you personalize your streaming experience and share the film with others.

Create Bookmarks

The first icon represents the ability to create bookmarks, to highlight the key moments in the film you might want to share with others or return to later.

Simply toggle the streaming player to the point at the film where you would like your clip to begin. Then click the bookmarking button, which will then show a little red dot, as though it is “recording”. Let the film play until the point that you’d like to clip to end, and then click the bookmarking tool a second time to bring the clip to an end.

The “Add Bookmark” window will then open up for you. Here, you can manually adjust the startpoint and endpoint of the clip. You can give the clip a name, provide a short description of what it contains or why you are highlighting this section, and add any tags you want to help identify this clip.

You then have the option to keep this clip private (so it is only visible to you) or to open it to other members of your school community who are screening through Film Platform. The last step is clicking “Save to Bookmark” and you are done!

The next button along allows you to see all of the bookmarks that have been made for this film, both by you and by other people at your university.

You will also be able to see this and the rest of your bookmarks if you click “My Account” at the top right hand side of the page, and then select “My Bookmarks”. Here, you have the options to view, share or edit your bookmarks.

Share the film

The linking icon allows you to share the URL of the film that will allow other members of your school community to instantly access the streaming player from both on and off campus. If you want students be able to view the film from off campus, you must add the proxy-prefix to the link. See example below.

Direct Film Link without Proxy-Prefix:

http://filmplatform.net/product/the-hunting-ground/

Direct Film Link with Proxy-Prefix:

http://ezproxy.fau.edu/login?url=http://filmplatform.net/product/the-hunting-ground/

You can also use social media to spread the word about the films. The envelope icon allows you to share the film via Facebook, Twitter, email, Google+, Linkedin, Pinterest and hundreds of additional social networks.

Create playlists

The last button on the streaming page dashboard is the Playlist button. At any point when you are watching a film, you can click on this button to add this film to your playlist. You will have the option of adding this film to an existing playlist, or creating a new playlist. Each playlist includes a description and tagging words to give other users an idea of the “theme” of your playlist. However, as with the Bookmarks, you have the option of keeping your playlist private or sharing it with the other users from your institution.

To see your playlists, you can click “My Account” in the top right hand corner and then select “My Playlists”.

Leave comments

To share your views on the film, write a short review or direct fellow viewers to additional information that they might find interesting, please feel free to leave a comment on the film page. You can do this by clicking the tab below the streaming player that says “Viewers Comments” and then simply enter your comment, name and email.

Request closed captions

At Film Platform, we are in the process of making all of our films fully accessible to all viewers. As we create closed captioning for more and more of our films, we are happy to prioritise films that have an immediate demand for closed captioning.

If you require closed captioning for a film that doesn’t currently offer this option, simply email us at [email protected], stating the film name for which you need the captions. We can have captions added to the film page within 10 working days, and there is no additional charge associated with this service.

Streaming films for which your institution does not yet have access

All of the films for which your institution does have access appear on the “My Streaming Page” which has been personalised for your library. If you find a film on our site for which you do not yet have access, you have a number of options for adding this to your collection of streaming titles.

Firstly, click the “Request from my Library” button on the film page to register your interest in a specific title. A Film Platform representative will be in touch, and will forward your request to your library team.

Secondly, if know the library representative for your department, please feel free to send them a message directly, asking them to set up streaming access for this film. You can always forward them the Film Platform request form that you have submitted through our website, so that they have all the relevant details to service your request.

Thirdly, you can set up streaming access yourself (if this is something your department will be paying for directly). Simply click “Open Streaming” and select “Streaming Access Purchase Options” to find the streaming order form on our website. You can choose which license option would suit you best, and follow the instructions on screen to submit your order.

Streaming access for new films can be set up within 24 hours of confirmation of the streaming order.

Adding a Film link to your LMS (Learning Management System)

Our links can be easily copied and pasted inside your LMS (such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard, etc). Please see an example of how to add a link via Canvas.

Please note that at present, the player can not be embedded into the course page, however the system does allow you to add a link which automatically takes students to their streaming player. If there is a special request to embed the player, we can make special arrangements. Please contact [email protected] for further information.
